Biography:
Ultra-Realist painter of fantasy landscapes, Steven Power is continuing
to gain reputation with art collectors worldwide. With each new
piece that Steven creates, the level of excitement in the galleries
and throughout the art community increases.
The comments from those visiting the galleries are often the same
whether from Japan, Australia, England, the U.S. or even Texas,
"Steven's work captures the essence of what he paints!"
or "It's as though you are drawn into his vision of paradise"
His paintings definitely have that effect on you.
"I am seeking
to capture that magical feeling we all experience when we happen
upon that extraordinary place in nature that leaves us with a
feeling of awe and respect for creation, the sky that is too blue,
the colors of a sunset that are almost overwhelming in their intensity,
the flowers, the smell of that special place."
Steven has had a long love affair with the ocean and nature in
general. His many years of surfing throughout California, Mexico
and Hawaii, searching for the perfect un-crowded wave, as well as
exploring the mountains and deserts of California , Arizona and
Nevada, provide the inspiration for Steven's fantastic imaginary
images. Images that some say are "Believable, yet at the same
time almost unbelievable".
"I am seeking to capture that magical feeling we all experience
when we happen upon that extraordinary place in nature that leaves
us with a feeling of awe and respect for the Creator.
The sky that is too blue! The colors of a sunset that are almost
overwhelming in their intensity. the flowers, the clouds, the smells
of that special place". Steven is currently living in Hawaii
on the island of Oahu, with his wife and four children; together
they enjoy the island life of year round water sports and outdoor
activity. Steven was commissioned to create the artwork for the
1997 TRIPLE CROWN OF SURFING official events poster; The 1998 PIPEMASTERS
official events poster and the 1999 PIPEMASTERS event. These are
the final events of the world tour of professional surfing. An invitation
to create the artwork for these events is a coveted honor among
the relatively few artists that really understand the majesty of
Hawaii's ocean experience. To be chosen to do the art for the same
event two years in a row is truly an honor.
TRAINING
Born in 1956 in Detroit Michigan, But raised in Southern California,
Steven has been a dedicated surfer since his early teens. Steven
has been capturing his adventures with pencil and paint for virtually
all of his life. The son of an ART CENTER COLLEGE OF DESIGN automotive
designer, Steven has derived much of his technique from his early
exposure to his father's work, and has been an artist for "as
long as I can remember". Steven has a wide range of art experience,
he has been commissioned to do many different types of projects
throughout his career, ranging from creative set painting and studio
backdrop creation for rock videos and film productions, to sculpture
and fine art commissions. He has spent years working with interior
designers and architects designing and creating murals and fantastic
faux finishes in some of the finest homes throughout California
and Hawaii. Steven's portfolio of private collectors is extensive,
and respect for his talent is growing rapidly as he continues to
turn heads with each new creation. Many collectors are jumping at
the opportunity to acquire Steven's original works at this stage
of his career. It seems that the time is now to acquire a Steven
Power original because the prices are on the way up. "He's
getting better with each new piece", is an often heard comment
in the galleries.
CURRENT THEME
"At this point I am focusing primarily on Fantasy tropical
images that would evoke a sense of pristine solitude, a safe place,
a peaceful "Garden of Eden" mood. A place that we would
all like to go to relax and unwind. But at the same time I want
to portray the awesome power of nature that I encounter while traveling
and exploring the oceans of the world".
THE ENVIRONMENT
Because of his many years in and around the ocean and nature, Steven
is dedicated to preserving a clean environment and to a responsible
approach to environmental issues. Steven is optimistic concerning
the environment, and an advocate of an emerging new school of "Smart
Environmentalism" an "Eco-Realist"1 Steven is careful
to sort out fact from fiction when it comes to environmental issues.
"I am an eco-optimist! I believe that there is a bright future
ahead. Technology has for the most part been a good thing, it has
helped to make all of our lives easier in many ways that we take
for granted. (Just ask your grandparents.) I believe we will continue
to employ our knowledge and ingenuity to develop better solutions
to the environmental challenges we will inevitably face as we work
together for a better future on planet earth.
SOLI DEO GLORIA
Steven is as passionate about his artwork as he is about his religious
beliefs. "As a Christian, I am dedicated to giving honor through
my artwork and my life to the greatest artist, the one who I believe
created all of this natural beauty in the first place. God is awesome!
and the real inspiration for everything that I paint. While some
may choose to believe in "Mother Nature" I choose to believe
in "Father God" who is alive, and capable of careful design
and deliberate creation. I believe that I will become a better artist
as I seek to know Him, and to understand how He has created this
incredibly beautiful world that we find ourselves in. Soli Deo Gloria
(to God alone the Glory!)"
Aloha
1: Term "ECO-REALIST" coined by author Gregg Easterbrook
in his book "A MOMENT ON THE EARTH" An excellent source
of facts on current environmental issues.
